Excellent first impressions of the Discoveryopt 5-40x56 FFP Rifle Scope.

First impressions upon receiving and opening the Discoveryopt 5-40 FFP MRAD riflescope was the enormity of this scope. It was expertly packaged in a large box with a large amount of foam providing great protection during transport. A set of rings were included in the package and they are greatly appreciated! Etched in the rings are ft lbs for both the rings and the base which attaches to a picatinny rail. This is a great feature to have on your rings/mount and will save time when removing and re-attaching the scope in the future. At this point I could not wait to get the scope mounted. Mounting the scope was easy with a Wheeler Scope Leveling kit. The view through the scope is clear and crisp and magnification is excellent. The eyepiece easily adjusts to bring the sight into focus. The side parallax adjustment is smooth and easy as well. Looking through the scope it is evident it has superior brightness and clarity which is a must have when shooting at daylight or dusk. I am a big fan of the Christmas Tree reticle with the usual references for holdover and windage corrections. I am also a fan of the illuminated reticle and this one has 6 levels of brightness. Another feature that is a huge plus is in between each illumination level is an off position. No matter which level of illumination the scope is set, the click before and after that level is off. The scope has good eye relief and should be comfortable to use for extended periods of shooting. Scope appears to be built to a high standard. I plan to use this scope for big game hunting for shots from 200 to 500 yards. It will be a couple of weeks before I have a chance to use this scope at a range and I will update this review after that outing.

Gen 2's are a decent improvement over gen 1

I found glass and eyebox on the gen 2 to be appropriate for the price point. No, this won't compete with a march 5-40x, but it's also 2,000$ less. I think these gen 2's are a decent upgrade and the clarity and light collection improvements over gen 1 are decent. Also the eyebox is a better than gen 1. This company seems to be going the right direction and I can't think of another 5-40x at this price point that does it better, so 5 stars for leading the charge in budget optics with features. Also, the reticle is very good. I appreciate the reticle a lot.

Please understand my review

OK, I did NOT purchase this scope from Amazon! I ordered mine directly from Discovery in China. The Amazon price is LESS than I paid.Reasoning: I have been using Discovery scopes for 2 decades and never had a single issue. I wanted to buy it here but it is a newer scope, and they are just now showing up here. That said, I was probably the first person in the USA to get one, as a baseline, I have:1 Discovery 5-25X56 Gen l ED3 Discovery 5-25X56 Gen ll ED4 Arken EP5 5-25X56 Gen l ED1 Arken 7-35X56 Gen ll ED1 DNT 7-35X56 EDThe 5-40 I have is the Gen l. There were some noticeable upgrades of the Discovery PRS 5-25X56 ED going from Gen l to Gen ll. So, no doubt this scope will probably be superior to my Gen lActual usage: This is a BIG scope! It is mounted on one of my precision 22lr rifles. It has a 35mm tube. (I have several older Millet scopes that are also 35mm). Discovery sells this size ring in different heights. And they are not only excellent, but AFFORDABLE!Glass: Just remember, this is a 40X scope. DO NOT expect the clarity to be the same at 40X as it is at 5X.Just the laws of physics. I usually turn down the magnification on mine to 25-32X and I think it's at least equal to the PRS Gen ll at 25X.Yes, the eye box gets tight, but perhaps this Gen ll is better.Eye box gets tighter as you zoom up in power. Just another fact of life with ALL brands.Bottom line: Will I upgrade to this Gen ll? Probably not, I am satisfied with the performance of my Gen l.Discovery has an excellent reputation of meaningful upgrades to ALL their products. Their new 'honed' precision rings are all I use now. You'll be happy with this scope, just keep in mind, it's BIG.I no longer hunt or compete, so I LOVE big scopes. And the Discovery turret feel is as good as the Arkens. And that's saying something!!
